The recommended route is to incinerate used petri dishes. However, for disinfection of these nonporous surfaces without any specifics about desired organism destruction, I would up the dosage and recommend a 10% bleach solution with a good soaking for 30 minutes. This is medical grade disinfectant which kills almost all bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. NOTE: Bleach solutions must be prepared daily. They lose their strength after 24 hours.
